A truck driver has escaped unscathed after his vehicle burst into flames inside a cross-harbour tunnel in Hong Kong.

The cargo compartment at the back of the truck caught fire at 4.43pm on Wednesday, shortly after the vehicle entered the Western Harbour Tunnel heading to Kowloon.

A video posted online shows debris, including wooden materials, bursting into flames inside the compartment.

In the clip, a burning piece of debris falls from the vehicle, with staff at the tunnel rushing to put it out with an extinguisher.

According to police, the blaze forced authorities to briefly close the tunnel’s Kowloon-bound passage to traffic.

The force said firefighters had extinguished the blaze and no one was injured in the incident, with an initial investigation uncovering nothing suspicious about its cause.

The tunnel was reopened at around 5.45pm after the truck was towed away, police said.
