TORONTO - A badly decomposed torso was found in a suitcase in Lake Ontario off Toronto by police, who notified authorities investigating the murder of a mother whose remains were found scattered around the city last month. Toronto police said two boaters spotted the suitcase and brought it to shore. Police officials said they cannot say who the victim was or their sex until they get autopsy results. In last month's case, Liu Guanghua's head, foot and hands were discovered in a river west of Toronto. A few days later, her two calves, a thigh and an arm were found in a creek in eastern Toronto. Her torso was not found. Her estranged boyfriend was charged with murder last month. AP

WELLINGTON - The captain and navigator of a cargo ship that ran aground on a New Zealand reef last year have been deported to the Philippines after completing their prison sentences. Captain Mauro Balomaga and navigator Leonil Relon were each sentenced to seven months in prison in May after pleading guilty to operating the Greek-owned Rena dangerously and altering ship documents after the October crash. Rena spilled hundreds of tonnes of oil around the Astrolabe Reef and killed thousands of sea birds. AP

WASHINGTON - Two International Space Station crew members have successfully completed a spacewalk to install a new power switching unit, the US space agency Nasa said. American Sunita Williams and Japan's Akihiko Hoshide had to contend with a sticky bolt that prevented them from completing the installation in a spacewalk last week. The malfunctioning power unit had deprived the space station of power from two of the eight solar wings. AFP

ANKARA - An explosion and blaze triggered by an accidentally dropped hand grenade killed 25 soldiers during a stock check at a Turkish ammunition depot, the government said. Four other soldiers were injured in the blast, which lit up the night sky with flames, and shattered windows in the nearby town of Afyonkarahisar in western Turkey. Forestry and water minister Veysel Eroglu ruled out terrorism and sabotage. The soldiers' remains were discovered early yesterday after a subsequent blaze was extinguished. AP
