Halloween, also known as All Hallows' Eve, is an annual festival that takes place around the world on October 31, the eve of the Christian feast of All Hallows. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. In recent times the festival is celebrated with activities including dressing up in spooky costumes, trick-or-treating, apple bobbing, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns and lighting bonfires.

A nine-year-old girl is in a US hospital after she was shot during a Halloween party by a relative who thought she was a skunk.

Police in western Pennsylvania said the girl was outside the party and over a hillside wearing a black costume and a black hat with a white tassel when a male relative mistook her for a skunk and fired a shotgun, hitting her in the shoulder on Saturday night.

Chief Ronald Leindecker of New Sewickley Township police told the Beaver County Times that the girl was alert and talking when she was flown to a hospital in Pittsburgh, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) away. Her condition was unavailable.

Leindecker says the man hadn’t been drinking and he doesn’t know whether charges will be filed.
