Someone phone Martin Scorsese. There’s gotta be a screenplay in this. A pair of brazen crooks have broken into the same cargo building at John F Kennedy airport that was the site of the 1978 Lufthansa heist featured in Scorsese’s classic gangster movie, “GoodFellas,” The New York Post reported.

And the prize? They broke in just before midnight local time on Monday and got away with about US$1.5 million worth of new Apple iPad minis that had just arrived from China, and used an airport forklift to load two pallets of the new tablets on to a truck, the newspaper reported.

They might have got away with more, but drove off, leaving three pallets of tablets behind after an airport worker challenged them, The New York Post reported.

The crime was eerily reminiscent of a theft of US$5 million in cash and nearly US$900,000 worth of jewellery from the same building at JFK on December 11, 1978. That haul would be about US$21 million if adjusted for inflation and has been ranked as America’s largest robbery of cash ever, the newspaper reported.

The newspaper said police investigating the crime believe the thieves had inside help and have been given three airport workers polygraph tests.
