Urging the opposition to work with his government, Mohammed Mursi said the nation's entire efforts should be focused on "production, work, seriousness and effort" now that a new constitution is in effect. BANGUI, Central African Republic - Minister of Territorial Administration Josie Binouan said rebels seized Sibut, 185 kilometres from Bangui, the capital, yesterday. Chadian army forces were based alongside the CAR army in Sibut but the city was taken without a fight as all the defence forces pulled back to Damara, 75 kilometres from Bangui on Friday. AP

 

RAMALLAH, Palestinian Territories - Nine Palestinians have died in an outbreak of the H1N1 influenza strain known as swine flu, the office of Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad said. "Latest figures and information … show that 187 cases have so far been recorded, the majority of which are in the northern West Bank," it said. NEW YORK - Dockworkers along the US east coast and the Gulf of Mexico agreed to extend their contract for more than a month, averting a weekend strike that could have crippled major ports from Boston to Houston and bottled up billions of dollars' worth of cargo. Talks aimed at reaching a new contract for the 14,500 longshoremen will continue during the extension, which runs until February 6. AP

 

LOS ANGELES - Veteran character actor Harry Carey Jnr, who appeared in scores of television shows and films including nine of John Ford's classic Hollywood westerns, has died at 91. Carey's big-screen credits included a co-starring role with John Wayne in Ford's 1948 outlaw film , 1949 western , also with Wayne, and a turn decades later in 1990 sci-fi comedy . Reuters

 

SAO PAULO - A police officer in southeastern Brazil shot and killed a refuse collector after mistaking the Bible he was carrying for a gun. Antonio Marcos dos Santos was stopped by police as he was heading to church in the city of Avare. When he raised his hands a police officer saw a bulge in his pocket and, thinking it was a weapon, opened fire. AP
