HOUSTON – A hacker apparently accessed private photos and emails sent between members of the Bush Family, including both former presidents. The Secret Service said it is investigating the report. The Smoking Gun website said the hacker, who went by the online moniker “Guccifer,” gained access to emails, photos, private telephone numbers and addresses of Bush family members and friends. The website displayed photos it said came from the hacker. AP
Duchess of York wins phone-hack payout
LONDON – Sarah, the Duchess of York, the ex-wife of Britain’s Prince Andrew, won undisclosed damages from Rupert Murdoch’s UK tabloid publisher yesterday over phone hacking by the News of the World. Her lawyer David Sherborne told the court the duchess became suspicious when journalists and photographers seemed to know her whereabouts and would be waiting for her at unpublicised events. AFP
Transsexual loses Polish speaker vote
WARSAW – Poland’s first transsexual legislator Anna Grodzka has lost her chance to become a deputy speaker in parliament after a vote left the incumbent in place. Grodzka became a candidate for a deputy speaker post after the politician holding the post for her party, Wanda Nowicka, was accused of accepting a bonus of 40,000 zlotys (HK$100,080) for her work last year. Woman detained for defacing ‘Liberty’
PARIS – A visitor to the Louvre’s newest extension in northern France has been detained after scrawling on Eugene Delacroix’s painting Liberty Leading the People with a marker. The woman, 28, was seized by a guard and a gallery visitor and handed over to police, according to the Louvre-Lens. It said the painting should clean easily. AP
