Flooding may force 100,000 from west Canada homes

Calgary city officials say as many as 100,000 people could be forced from their homes due to heavy flooding in western Canada, while mudslides have forced the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway around the mountain resort towns of Banff and Canmore.

Officials say the evacuation would take place in stages over the next few days.

Torrential rains and flooding have been particularly destructive in communities just south of Calgary.

STARS air ambulance spokesman Cam Heke said on Thursday a woman remains missing after a mobile home was swept away.

Town of Canmore spokeswoman Sally Caudill says motorists who were trapped overnight Wednesday by water spilling over Canada’s main western highway had to be rescued by helicopter.
