The Edward Snowden saga took a bizarre twist yesterday after former Russian spy-turned- celebrity Anna Chapman apparently proposed to the US fugitive whistle-blower via Twitter.

In an unverified post, the 31-year-old Russian simply asked: "Snowden, will you marry me?!".

Red-haired Chapman made worldwide headlines in 2010 after she was caught in the US posing as a New York real-estate agent and swiftly deported back to Russia along with nine other suspected sleeper agents.

She later tweeted: "NSA, will you look after our children?"

When asked by e-mail if she was serious, Chapman told The Wall Street Journal : "You are welcome to use your imagination."

For Snowden, the proposal could offer him a solution to his problems as he could qualify for a Russian passport through marrying a Russian national.

The former contractor to the US National Security Agency made a dramatic dash from Hong Kong to Moscow on June 23, reportedly using a temporary travel document issued by Ecuador but which has since been described as a "mistake" by Ecuadorean president Rafael Correa.

He is believed to be still in the transit area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport.

Snowden has applied for asylum in 20 countries after his passport was revoked and the US government filed espionage charges against him for leaking classified NSA documents about its cyber-surveillance programmes.

Chapman was married to Briton Alex Chapman for four years before divorcing in 2006.

Since returning to Russia, Chapman, whose father worked as a diplomat, has dabbled in modelling and hosted a TV show called Secrets of the World.

hard times !
though my government says
we can't marry in the
transit zone
yet our marriage certificate
can be signed separately
once there is a will
there is a way
Snowden marries Anna
is not impossible
when you become a Russian
you can stay in Russia
as an American Russian
your Anna
hard times !
Anna Chapman should be serious
she is never playful
a mature woman who experienced
much.
The sour taste of being nicely treated
by the NSA of America
'will you look after my children ?'
she asked when leaving the land of 'free'
for home---Russia.
Now the whistle-blower's plight
she can feel it herself
letting him have a Russian passport
no longer a stateless man
with nowhere to go
deserted by his own home country
--a most-wanted man
for justice in this
unfair world
Ponder over the proposal
this might be
the best outlet
You two have the common foe
--notorious NSA
the marriage might hurt no-one
since you have already
left yours in Hawaii
without a simple good-bye
And will never see her
Let God takes over you
and your great task continues
Come on, our whistle-blower
Time is running short
you can't burn your
precious youth
in that transit zone
living like a refugee
laughed at by your
Uncle Sam.
Will you ?
