Luxury sportscar maker Lamborghini is going ahead with plans to lauch the Urus sport-utility vehicle in 2017.

It will be the brand's first SUV model since the Rambo Lambo of the 1990s.

"The luxury SUV market is poised to continue to grow," CEO Stephan Winkelmann said at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Volkswagen's Lamborghini, Bentley and Porsche high-end brands are all adding SUVs to their line-ups as the models win a greater share of US buyers.

Bentley got the parent's go-ahead to produce the world's most powerful crossover model last year.

Lamborghini discontinued the Rambo Lambo in 1993 after a failed effort to make military vehicles. It unveiled a prototype of the Urus in 2012.

The share of SUVs in the US car market widened to 30.9 per cent last year from 29.7 per cent.

China, including Hong Kong, was the second-biggest market for Lamborghini last in 2013.

Last year it introduced its Veneno, with a US$3.9 million price tag making it one of the most expensive cars ever produced.

According to a McKinsey & Co report, the market for premium cars in China expanded 36 per cent a year in the past decade, topping the 26 per cent annual growth in the overall car market.
