A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck late Sunday off the coast of northern California, the US Geological Survey reported.
The US Geological Survey says the temblor struck at 5:18 GMT (10.18pm local time) about 6 kilometres beneath the Pacific seabed and about 80 kilometres west of the town of Eureka.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department, which oversees most of the populated areas near the quake, says there have been no calls about damage or injuries.
USGS seismologist Susan Hoover says more than 300 people have reported feeling the tremor on their website. The quake was felt as far south as the San Francisco Bay Area and as far north as Oregon.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a bulletin announcing the quake and saying that “a widespread destructive tsunami threat does not exist based on historical earthquake and tsunami data.”
