Watch: Czech Social Democrats take on jobless rate with 'workplace sex' video

A controversial video highlighting the thrill of sex in the workplace is being used by the leading party in the Czech Republic to appeal to voters in next week's European elections.

The Czech Social Democratic party, which is hoping to add to its seven Euro-MPs in Strasbourg, endorsed the video posted by its youth branch, the message of which can be summed up as, "unemployment is depriving people of the joys of an office fling".

The video shows a young woman in office clothes working at a computer. After glancing at the clock, she sneaks off to the next room and can be seen in passionate embrace with a colleague behind the door.

"Everybody who wants to should be able to enjoy something a bit different during breaks. It is a shame there are half a million people who don't have jobs," says a voice-over accompanying the video.

Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka sought to play down the minute-long campaign film as harmless fun that makes a serious point. "I take the video of the Young Social Democrats with a pinch of salt; no need to be overly prudish about it. It points out the chillingly real problem of high unemployment."

Members of the public appear divided, however, with some commenting underneath the video that it is "funny but inappropriate" and "embarrassing and sexist".

Lukas Kaucky, head of the Young Social Democrats, said response to the video was mixed. "It depends on people's age. Many people who have seen the video were really shocked. But we always remind people that they can't take our video too seriously.

"We don't say that people should have sex at work; that is not the point of the video. We just want to highlight the problem of young adult unemployment," he said.

"We think that this problem has been ignored in the Czech Republic so we want to show how important it is."
