A drunk substance abuse counsellor who drove for 3km with a pedestrian embedded in her car's windscreen after she hit him has been jailed for 55 years.

Sherri Lynn Wilkins, 53, was convicted in February of second degree murder, driving under the influence and leaving the scene of the crash that killed Phillip Moreno, 31.

Wilkins drove through a Los Angeles suburb on November 12, 2012, with Moreno stuck in her windscreen, before another motorist signalled for her to stop.

When she eventually did she smoked a cigarette as bystanders tried to help the injured man. Moreno died in hospital.

At her trial, Wilkins insisted she was not drunk at the time, although she had consumed three vodka shots with beer and tomato juice.

She said it appeared to her that the man "came from the sky", describing it as "like a blur of something, like a flash of something".

"It was very shocking and very strange," she said of the incident, adding: "I didn't know what was going on ... I don't feel like I had hit him with my car."

The judge described her "extraordinary callousness" when she swerved in a bid to shake Moreno off the car, rather than stopping to seek help for him.

But That Isn't Justice surely?
I mean OK she Caused the Death of a Pedestrian While she was Drunk and appeared unaware of the situation.
but to sentence her to 55 years in prison seems unjust to me.
especially when america allows the cigarette business to destroy the health and lives of thousands of American citizens every year
and not one of those involved in the cigarette business are held accountable.
OK people know what they are doing and the risks they are taking with their health and lives when they decide to start smoking.
but those involved in the smoking business also know what they are doing and that it benefits no one except to destroy health and lives.
and yet they are permitted by the same people that create the laws on drink driving to do what they do even when what they do ruins health and lives.
That is extremely unjust.

I still believe That The Sentence Given to This Woman is Unjust.
and My reason Is based on the fact that I believe that the death Caused Was an accident
Due to The Driver of The Vehicle being Distracted Due to the Effect Of Alcohol.
And I would Assume That if she had not been under the influence of Alcohol,
She would Have been able to concentrate More and therefore more Likely to Avoid Driving into a Pedestrian resulting in Death.
Also The fact that Cigarette companies are allowed to knowingly sell cigarettes Which damage The health of those consuming them
which results in serious damage to their health causing diseases such as lung and Throat cancer
which is what millions have died from as a direct result of Smoking.
and yet the makers and sellers of cigarettes are allowed by the government to continue feeding the public with the health damaging and death causing cigarettes
and even when millions Die, not one of the shopkeepers and cigarette makers are held accountable!
and yet if a person causes the death of a pedestrian even by accident
they are given a 55 year prison sentence.
and in the meantime the government that give harsh sentences for 2nd degree murder,
permit the destruction of millions of people by the cigarette companies.
no way is that Just.
the death caused by sherri was a accident
but the deaths caused by the cigarette business that to me is Murder by means of cigarettes.
and amazingly it isn't against the law.
