Revelations about CIA mistreatment of captive terrorism suspects has spurred worldwide revulsion and provided ammunition to foreign critics who accuse the United States of a double standard on human rights at home and abroad.

The report, estimated to have cost US$40 million, and the damning details were received by friendly and hostile nations alike as validation of their criticism of the George W. Bush administration's secret detention and interrogation programmes after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Among the critics was China which urged the US to "correct its ways".

"China has consistently opposed torture," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said.

Afghanistan's new president, Ashraf Ghani, condemned the torture claims in the "strongest terms".

"All the accepted principles of human rights or those of US laws have been violated by a number of CIA staff and contractors," he said.
