New York police have broken into a barricaded apartment to arrest the son of a Wall Street hedge fund founder who was found shot dead in his home.

Thomas Gilbert Snr, 70, who headed the US$200 million Wainscott Capital Management fund, was killed at his luxurious Beekman Place apartment on Sunday, prompting investigators to seek his son, according to the NYPD. Gilbert had been shot in the head.

The victim's Princeton-educated son, Thomas Gilbert Jnr, 30, was taken into custody at a separate Manhattan residence and was being questioned, a police spokesman said shortly after 1am yesterday in New York. The son hasn't been charged with a crime, the spokesman said.

The New York Daily News reported that Gilbert Jnr had barricaded himself into his own apartment for several hours. Officers dressed in riot gear eventually hacked down the door late on Sunday and took him into custody, the Daily News said.

Earlier, authorities had responded to a call about 3.30pm on Sunday and found Gilbert Snr dead in a bedroom of his eighth-floor unit.

The investor and his son had been discussing differences in their relationship before the incident, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing an unidentified law enforcement official.
