Europe's worst coach accidents in past 10 years

As many as 18 people are feared dead Monday after a tour bus burst into flames following a collision with a truck in southern Germany.

That number would surpass the last major European bus accident, which occurred in January in Italy and killed 16 people.

2017

January 21, ITALY: A Hungarian coach carrying 56 people bursts into flames after crashing on a highway near the northern city of Verona. Sixteen people die, mostly teenagers returning from a ski trip to France.

October 23, FRANCE: At least 43 people are killed when a coach carrying members of a pensioner’s club collides with a lorry and bursts into flames near Puisseguin in southwest France, in the country’s worst road accident in three decades.

July 22, TURKEY: A tanker truck carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) overturns and explodes on a highway in southeast Turkey, killing 26 people.

January 23, TURKEY: Twenty-one people are killed when a bus overturns on icy roads in central Turkey in the dead of night.

2012

March 13, SWITZERLAND: Twenty-eight people, including 22 children, die in a crash in Sierre, southern Switzerland, as they return to Belgium from a skiing holiday.

December 21, TURKEY: Twenty-five people, mainly students, are killed when a truck loaded with bricks collides with a bus near Salat, a village in the southeastern Diyarbakir province.

2010

October 12, UKRAINE: Forty-five people are killed when a bus packed with rush-hour commuters crashes into a train at a level crossing near the village of Marhanets in central Ukraine.

2009

July 24, RUSSIA: A collision between a fuel truck and a bus on the Rostov-Krasnodar motorway in southwestern Russia leaves 25 people dead.

March 25, RUSSIA: At least 25 people are killed when a bus and a truck collide in the central Vladimir region.

2008

November 4, GERMANY: Twenty people, mainly senior citizens, perished when a bus bursts into flames on a motorway near the northern city of Hanover. The blaze is reportedly sparked by someone smoking in the toilet.

2007

July 22, FRANCE: Twenty-six people are killed when a coach carrying Polish pilgrims skids out of control and plunges into a ravine near the Alpine town of Vizille.
