Free from Islamic State siege, Deir-ez-Zor residents look forward to pizza
Since 2014, IS has held swathes of Deir-ez-Zor province and about 60 per cent of the provincial capital of the same name

Haitham al-Ahmad has been busy dusting down kitchen appliances ahead of the grand reopening of his pizza place, after government troops broke a crippling jihadist siege of Syria’s Deir-ez-Zor.
He brought down the shutters on his restaurant nearly three years ago, when Islamic State (IS) militants cut off regime-held parts of the eastern city.
Russian-backed Syrian forces broke through on Tuesday, and food supplies have now begun entering a western enclave of the city via the newly opened road.
In his “Prince of Pizza and Pies” restaurant in Al-Qusur district, Ahmad excitedly listed the dishes that will feature on his menu.
We’ll get back to work, and Deir-ez-Zor will go back to the way it was
“I’ll serve meat pies, walnut and tomato paste, pizza, and mushahamiya” – a meat loaf especially made in Deir-ez-Zor.
