Major Canadian airport opens post-security relief area for pets in first for the country
New facility means pet owners and their pets no longer have to go through long security lines multiple times
Vancouver International Airport (YVR) unveiled a room, which is post-security in the U.S. departures area, where pets are able to relieve themselves.
The move means that the rising number of pet owners who take pets with them into the cabin on flights will have an easier time of letting their pets relieve themselves beforehand.
Previously, passengers had to leave the secured area if their pets had to discharge before boarding the flight and they had already gone through security.
That meant that the pet owners and their pets would have to go through the often-long security lines twice.
Many pet owners likely let their pet discharge outside the airport on some grassy patches near the terminal. They then have been able to ask airport sanitation staff for absorbent mats that are made for pets.
The new area has a touchless entry, Braille signage, artificial grass area to make pets more comfortable, lowered counters for individuals using wheelchairs and a large interior for easy maneuverability.
According to the Vancouver Airport Authority, YVR is the first major airport in Canada to have such a place in a secured part of the airport.
