In an abrupt about-face, Romney emerges from dinner full of frog legs and high praise for ‘winner’ Trump
The second meeting of the two men was the most public show of rapprochement yet
They talked for more than two hours, they laughed, they munched on carefully prepared frog legs, and afterward, Mitt Romney, once one of Donald Trump’s harshest critics, emerged a changed man.
“I had a wonderful evening with president-elect Trump,” the former Massachusetts governor declared to the press after a final course of chocolate cake.
“We had another discussion about affairs throughout the world, and these discussions I’ve had with him have been enlightening, and interesting and engaging.”
“What I’ve seen through these discussions I’ve had with president-elect Trump, as well as what we’ve seen in his speech the night of his victory, as well as the people he’s selected as part of his transition, all of those things combined give me increasing hope that president-elect Trump is the very man who can lead us to that better future,” he added.
It was almost as if Romney had not been one of Trump’s leading detractors, calling him a “con man,” a “fake” and a “phoney” who was unprepared for the presidency.
“His domestic policies would lead to recession,” Romney had declared in a speech eviscerating Trump in March.
“His foreign policies would make America and the world less safe.
“He has neither the temperament nor the judgement to be president and his personal qualities would mean that America would cease to be a shining city on a hill,” he added.
But now, with Trump assembling his Cabinet, Romney has improbably found himself on a short list of candidates to serve as secretary of state.
The second meeting of the two men, this time in the dimly lit dining room of Jean-Georges restaurant inside of Trump International Hotel & Tower New York, was the most public show of rapprochement yet. As they entered the room, patrons applauded. Minutes into the meal, as Trump and Romney (both abstainers) sipped on their wine glasses of water, members of the travelling press pool were allowed in the room for a photo-op.
In a restaurant where dinner starts at $148 a head, the Trump team said they feasted on garlic soup with thyme, sauteed frog legs and scallops with caramelised cauliflower and a caper raisin emulsion.
For their main course, both the president-elect and Priebus opted for prime sirloin with a citrus glaze and carrots, and Romney for lamb chops with the mushroom Bolognese sauce. All three had chocolate cake.
Concern from some within Trump’s circle that Romney lacked the requisite loyalty to be considered for the critical position of chief diplomat has spilled out into the open for days.
Emerging from the dinner, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee seemed to address those concerns, noting pointedly that Trump had done something he had been unable to do: win.
“By the way, it’s not easy, winning,” Romney said.
“I know that myself. He did something I tried to do and was unsuccessful in. He won the general election.”
The man who Romney once denounced as divisive and dangerous now carries a “message of inclusion and bringing people together.”
Trump seemed pleased. Upon leaving the dinner, he was asked by CNN’s Jim Acosta whether Romney might be his next secretary of state.
He replied: “Well we’re gonna see what happens.”
Other candidates under consideration to be the top US diplomat include retired Marine Corps General John F. Kelly, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, retired General David Petraeus and Republican Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee.
But Trump’s team have voiced doubts about bringing in a former critic and rallied around their preferred candidate, Giuliani, a long-time Trump friend and loyalist.
Leading this effort in an unusually public way has been senior Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway, who told a round of television interviews on Sunday that Trump supporters would feel “betrayed” if Romney was picked.
