A reward of up to HK$2.5 million is being offered for information leading to the arrest of two robbers and the recovery of HK$11.7 million in cash and valuables stolen from a company safe in Cheung Sha Wan earlier this year.
It is the largest of the 24 police rewards totalling HK$9.7 million that remain unclaimed. The unsolved crimes include homicides and acid attacks.
According to police, the holdup happened between 2.40am and 6.30am on April 7.
Two masked robbers wearing baseball caps subdued and tied up a security guard before breaking into the office of Feoso Oil on the top floor of Feoso Building on Lai Chi Kok Road, Cheung Sha Wan.
The robbers prised open three safes and stole cash, dozens of watches, about 200 Canadian maple leaf gold coins, jewellery and cash from the company director's office.
The director was a collector of antique and luxury watches, a police officer said.
"The reward is being offered by the victim and, of course, is approved by police," he said.
The officer said that offering the reward showed police were short on leads in the case. The reward was posted on the police website earlier this month.
So far there have been no arrests and none of the valuables have been recovered.
"It's possible the stolen goods were smuggled out of Hong Kong and sold on the black market," the officer said.
The two thieves are believed to be aged between 40 and 50, 1.7 metres tall and of medium build. The Sham Shui Po district crime squad is investigating.
The second-largest reward, HK$800,000, is for information leading to the arrests of four Wo Shing Wo triad members wanted over the death of Lee Tai-lung, head of the Tsim Sha Tsui faction of the Sun Yee On triad.
Lee, 41, was rammed by a car outside the Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui before being hacked to death in August 2009.
The third biggest reward, of up to HK$500,000, is being offered for the recovery of 16.83 carat emerald ring worth HK$12.2 million that vanished in seven minutes after being left in a washroom at the Four Seasons Hotel in Central in September last year. It is owned by Caroline Scheufele, copresident of the Swiss luxury watch and jewellery brand Chopard. Scheufele wore the ring to the city for the launch of a shop at IFC Mall.
A reward of HK$300,000 posted on the police website last week is being offered for information about the killing of 43-year-old Pakistani man, Michael Danyal, who was found dead at his home in Empire Apartments in King's Road, North Point, in November last year.
