Rangers boss McCoist insists Motherwell are Cup favourites

Rangers manager plays down expectations for his team against SPL leaders Motherwell

Rangers manager Ally McCoist says Motherwell should be regarded as favourites as the sides prepare to clash in the third round of the League Cup at Ibrox tonight.

The tie marks Rangers' first meeting with top-flight opposition since the "newco" were denied entry to the Scottish Premier League and voted into the bottom tier of the Scottish Football League in the summer.

The Gers sit second in the Third Division, while Motherwell are top of the SPL.

The bookmakers have made the Glasgow giants favourites for the match but McCoist says this should be ignored and is wary of the challenge Stuart McCall's side will pose at Ibrox.

"I'm of the opinion Motherwell should be favourites. Of course they should, they're top of the SPL and they're there on merit," the Rangers manager said.

"We're a completely and utterly new team that's finding it's way, not overnight, we won't develop overnight, but we must take forward and positive steps all along.
