EXQUISITE TASTE OF ZEN
With its angular lines, understated tones and natural materials, this traditional Japanese eatery has an unmistakable Zen quality. Specialising in sushi, sashimi and teppanyaki, Edo Japanese Cuisine has an extensive, almost overwhelming menu. There are salads, soups, simple rice, noodle dishes, bento boxes and a parade of chef’s specialities – the prawn tempura is sublime.
We opted for an all-you-can-eat teppanyaki set, which was excellent value. We started with a delicious vegetable salad, moving on to a mouthwatering array of sashimi. The US beef melted in our mouths. It was complemented by well-seasoned fried rice with garlic and vegetables. The Nameko miso soup was pungent and flavourful. For dessert, we had a banana fritter with vanilla ice cream – an indulgent finish to a delicious meal. The tempura ice cream is extraordinary.
Edo has cold and warm sake, plum wines and Japanese and international beers. You can also order from the hotel’s extensive wine cellar. We started with a pinot grigio, moving on to a dry riesling, the freshness of which proved a perfect match for Japanese food. Michael Taylor
