The body of a Hong Kong doctor murdered in a Shenzhen hotel has been brought back to the city.
Tuen Mun Hospital ophthalmologist Colette Tsang Shi-lok was found dead in her hotel room at Dameisha, Shenzhen, late last month.
The case was kept quiet until it was reported in Hong Kong media yesterday. Mainland authorities are categorising the case as "assault causing death".
It is not known whether an autopsy and inquest will be performed in Hong Kong, as the crime happened over the border. Lawyer Albert Luk Wai-hung said it would depend on the Hong Kong Police and Tsang's family whether the case is pursued here.
However, if it can be proved that the assault was planned in Hong Kong and then happened in Shenzhen, the case could also be prosecuted here as it involved Hong Kong people, Luk said.
A police spokeswoman said yesterday that Shenzhen authorities approached the Hong Kong Police on December 28 regarding the case, and the Hong Kong force assisted them.
