Liaison chief meets Heung Yee Kuk
The new chief of Beijing's liaison office in Hong Kong, Zhang Xiaoming, meets members of the rural affairs body the Heung Yee Kuk at a spring reception, with Chief Secretary Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor also in attendance. This will be one of the first public appearances by Zhang in Hong Kong since he took office in December. Zhang is a Basic Law expert and worked under new Communist Party chief Xi Jinping on the Hong Kong affairs working croup.
 
Wong Kar-wai announces Berlin film awards
Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai announces the winners of the prestigious Golden Bear award and other top honours at the finale of the Berlin International Film Festival. Gus Van Sant's film about the shale gas industry, Promised Land, starring Matt Damon, and Steven Soderbergh's thriller Side Effects, featuring Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones, are among the 19 films competing for the top prize.
 
London's back in fashion
The eyes of the fashion world turn to London, with a star from the world of pop showcasing her credentials at the start of London Fashion Week. Rihanna presents her designs today in a much-anticipated catwalk show for British chain River Island. The action continues tomorrow with shows from leading designers Vivienne Westwood, Mulberry, Preen and Mary Katrantzou.
 
Myanmar observes US-Thai drill
US forces takes part in their annual military drills with their colleagues in Thailand. But this year's manoeuvres will, for the first time, be observed by military leaders from Myanmar, a sign of warming ties between the former pariah state and Washington. Last year's edition of the Cobra Gold exercise involved more than 10,000 US troops and 3,400 Thais, as well as representatives from five other Asian nations. China was one of nine nations given observer status.
 
Former Israeli foreign minister on trial
Former Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman, a close ally of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, faces a Jerusalem court tomorrow for the start of a corruption trial. The far-right leader is changed with fraud and breach of trust, allegations that prompted his resignation as foreign minister in December. He was re-elected to the Knesset last month but has vowed to quit politics if convicted.
 
Billionaire reveals Titanic plans in HK
Australian billionaire Clive Palmer is in Hong Kong to reveal more about his plans to build and operate Titanic II, a replica of the luxury passenger liner that sank in April 1912 with the loss of more than 1,500 lives. Palmer, chairman of Blue Star Line, holds a press briefing this morning and then travels to Macau for a dinner at the Venetian for about 600 people. The dinner features the same 11-course menu offered to first-class passengers on the Titanic, plus performances by international artists.
