Jing Ying event reaches crucial stage

Yuen Long boys' volleyball champions TWGHs Lo Kon Ting Memorial College (LKT) are aiming to reach the All-Hong Kong Jing Ying final, and banish memories of a disappointing semi-final defeat last year.

The coveted Jing Ying title is being contested at Tsing Yi Sports Centre this week, and the tournament is down to the last four teams.

In the quarter-finals yesterday, LKT gained sweet revenge by beating Jockey Club Ti-I College (Ti-I), who knocked them out at the semi-final stage last year.

In this morning's semi-finals, they will take on Kwai Chung champions, Shek Lei Catholic Secondary School (SLC).

SLC clinched their place in the last four with victory over Tai Po's top team, Hong Kong Taoist Association the Yuen Yuen Institute No 2 Secondary School.

In the other semi-final, surprise qualifiers Cheung Sha Wan Catholic Secondary School (CSW) will face off against title favourites, New Method College (NMC).

CSW were at their best as they eased past Tuen Mun title-holders, Po Leung Kuk Tang Yuk Tien College, while NMC beat Sha Tin's Immaculate Heart of Mary College.

In the girls' competition, the final four qualifiers have a familiar look. Three teams who reached this stage last year made it through again, including defending champions St Stephen's Girls' College, 2003 winners Ti-I, and last year's runners-up CCC Ming Kei College.

This morning, St Stephen's will play Ti-I for a shot at the title, while Ming Kei clash with Tuen Mun's Yan Chai Hospital Memorial Secondary School No 2.

The winners will qualify for the championship games tomorrow at 9am (girls) and 11am (boys).
