European artworks come alive

Liz Gooch

Students from more than 190 schools across Hong Kong will learn about western art history first hand when they visit a new exhibition featuring works by Picasso, Matisse and Brancusi later his month.

The exhibition, which will go on show at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, features more than 50 portrait paintings, sculptures and installations from the prestigious Centre Pompidou in Paris.

The museum's guided school tours of the 'Artists and their Models' exhibition are fully booked but schools can still register for a free visit on Thursdays.

Assistant curator (extension services) at the museum, Jennifer Chu Shui-ping, said the exhibition featured works by masters of the first half of the 20th century such as Picasso, Matisse, Brancusi, Soutine, Modigliani, Dubuffet, Bacon and Balthus, as well as a selection of contemporary works by artists such as Adami and Martial Raysse.

She said the exhibition would be a valuable resource for teachers, especially those teaching secondary school students.

A lecture designed for teachers will be held today. 'We will provide them with more background information and western art history to use in their classes,' Ms Chu said.

Teachers can also download a worksheet on the exhibition for primary students from the museum's website. An education gallery at the museum will provide students with a drawing and reading corner where they can learn more about the works.

The exhibition, supported by the South China Morning Post, runs from September 30 to December 3.
