Bubble wrap

Workers add hi-tech plastic cladding to the outside of the National Aquatics Centre - or 'water cube' - on the Olympic Green in Beijing yesterday.

The revolutionary structure is an architectural play on the geometry of water bubbles and is on target to be completed by next October, well before the Games start in August 2008.

The Water Cube houses the pools for the swimming and diving competitions, along with seating and facilities for 17,000 spectators.

It was shown, along with the National Stadium - which is popularly known as 'the bird's nest' - to a gathering of 300 media representatives who are visiting Beijing this week for the first world press briefing on the 2008 Olympic Games.
