Updated at 6.13pm: A veteran pro-Beijing politician in Hong Kong died on Tuesday of blood cancer at the age of 69, local media reported.
Raymond Wu Wai-yung, a former drafter of the Basic Law and a local delegate to the National People?s Congress, died in Queen Mary Hospital, Cable TV reported on Tuesday.
The Ming Pao Daily newspaper said Wu, who was also a doctor, had been treated for blood cancer since his return from a visit to Anhui province in August.
Wu was a conservative politician who had been opposing public campaigns advocating an early introduction of full democracy.
He argued that there was no guarantee universal suffrage could return a ?patriot? to serve as the city?s leader.
Wu also supported a move to seek Beijing?s interpretation of the Basic Law in 2005 when a row emerged over the tenure of the successor to former chief executive Tung Chee-hwa, when he resigned early last year.
