Peddle to the metal
Brazilian music isn't all about samba and bossa nova - the country's rich musical heritage also extends to heavy metal.
Metal has been one of the country's most popular musical exports since the 1980s. The movement was spearheaded by Sepultura, who in their prime were one of the world's most critically acclaimed metal acts.
Another well-known metal act from the land of tropicalia is Angra (below), a progressive power metal band from Sao Paulo. Since forming in 1991, Angra have become a regular fixture at the world's top heavy metal festivals.
Angra are known for a symphonic and technical approach to their craft. During the course of their six albums, their sound has evolved from the classically influenced debut, Angels Cry, to this year's more progressive Aurora Consurgens.
The Brazilians will be appearing at Edge in Central from 8pm on October 22. Advance tickets are HK$350, from Trinity Records, Shop 108 1/F Richmond Shopping Centre, 109 Argyle Street, Mong Kok. Tickets at the door will cost HK$400.
Alfresco sounds
Friday Fest is returning to Island East this year, bringing some
end-of-the-week stress-relief to Quarry Bay office workers. Every Friday night, from tomorrow to December 15, the open-air plaza at the end of Tong Chong Street will play host to a variety of acts under the theme of 'classic meets jazz'.
Some highlights of this year's programme are Hungarian jazz band Soulwhat on October 20, Japanese guitarist Takeda Kazuo on November 24, and local jazz figures Ted Lo and Eugene Pao
on December 1.
On the classical front, the DeBonair String Quartet will appear alongside with Frankie Chitem & Friends tomorrow night, while the Pachelbels will perform on November 3.
All performances are free and run from 6pm to 8pm.
