Farmers are wasting water

China's water shortage is being compounded by over-irrigation and pollution, according to a top advisory board.

Inefficient farming practices, such as over-irrigation of crops, is just one wasteful use of water cited by the China Council for International Co-operation on Environment and Development, Xinhua reported yesterday.

The board said farming consumed the most water, 67.3 per cent of China's usage, but much was going to waste.
