Kuehne + Nagel is on a recruit drive to meet an ambitious growth target in the Pearl River Delta

AWARD-WINNING logistics giant Kuehne + Nagel is on a long-term recruitment drive in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta as it targets double-digit growth well above the market average.

The Swiss-owned group, which leads the market in global sea freight, and ranks third in contract logistics and fourth in global airfreight, has 'ambitious targets for further development', according to Joerg Bull, managing director for Hong Kong, Macau and South China.

'Our business is booming with double-digit growth in the wake of China joining the World Trade Organisation, and South China, in particular, becoming the world's manufacturing powerhouse,' Mr Bull said.

He oversees a workforce of 800 in Hong Kong and South China, where the firm has logistics facilities in Shenzhen, Guangzhou and the port of Yantian, with sales offices in Dongguan and Zhongshan, and plans to extend operations to Nansha.

But Kuehne + Nagel is committed to capturing a higher market share and seeks candidates experienced in operations, sales and account management for many multinational customers with regional head offices in Hong Kong.

Also needed to drive the expansion are graduate management trainees as well as enthusiastic beginners, who should be 'willing to learn and accept change, [be] proactive, aggressive and self-motivated with a positive working attitude'.

'We aim to outperform the market by organically growing at more than twice the market rate in our core business units. As a result, we have permanent job opportunities for good local and foreign talent,' Mr Bull said. 'Our investment in people is a continuous process to cope with the increased demand for integrated logistics.'

Kuehne + Nagel is not only pursuing its ambitious growth target by pure volume development. IT-based supply chain management and effective cost management are also keys to both value-added service and increased profitability.

'An integrated service offering with a finely meshed worldwide network and highly advanced information technology systems are essential in fulfilling future customer needs,' Mr Bull said.

Three new products introduced earlier this year, for example, reflect the demand for innovation. KN Express, KN Expert and KN Extend are three separate airfreight options priced mainly according to the length of transit time.

The novelty is that customers can track the progress of their shipments online due to electronic monitoring of consignments by all parties involved.

The group also provides many specialised solutions in hotel and aviation logistics, as well as niche sectors that include the global transport of forestry products and perishables, exhibition logistics, and giant oil and energy projects.

Its logistics capabilities in project management were recently underscored by delivering China's heaviest single piece of cargo, a 358-tonne power generator shipped from Poland to Anhui province, including a 1,200km barge trip up the Yangtze River.

For recruits, Kuehne + Nagel promises professional development through career planning, international postings and job rotation for all-around experience of the operation.

Fresh graduates joining the two-year executive logistics trainee programme work in all key departments to learn the basics and prepare for supervisory and management positions.
