The big wet, May 29

29 May 2015

Torrential rain - the worst for 40 years in some parts of the country - late last week and early this week caused mudslides and major flooding in six mainland provinces mainly in the southeast. More than 50 people died, including 16 people killed when a building in Guiyang collapsed after a landslide. Rescue workers swung into action to help those whose homes were swamped. Often it was the elderly who needed rescuing with some officers even carrying people on their backs. Photographers from Xinhua, Imaginechina, ChinaFotoPress, Agence France-Presse, CNS and Reuters were on hand to cover the flooding and the rescue efforts.
