Suffer the little children, November 22

22 Nov 2014

Buses crammed with children are a common sight in the mainland's rural areas as parents lack alternative transport to ferry them to schools often far from their homes. Such dangerous overcrowding on often unlicensed buses has been linked to a spate of accidents. The latest came this week, with 11 nursery school children killed when their minibus and a truck collided in Shandong province. There was an outcry three years ago when 19 kindergarten pupils died in a similar collision in Gansu province. That bus - licensed to carry nine people - held 64. Mandatory standards, including rules for seat design and the fitting of safety equipment were released, but still the accidents happen. Photos by China Foto Press, Xinhua and Reuters
