Severe smog weather has been enveloping an extensive area of eastern China including the metropolis cities of Shanghai and Nanjing.

Chinese capital Beijing has for many years suffered from serious air pollution. Primary sources of pollutants include exhaust emission from China's surging number of vehicles, coal burning in northern regions, dust storms from the north and local construction dust.

The escalating air pollution on unprecedented levels in recent years has elevated public awareness and has prompted the government to finally roll out emergency measures.
