Faith and frenzy: Philippines' Black Nazarene procession, January 10

10 Jan 2014

The streets of the Philippine capital, Manila, filled with up to 12 million Filipino Catholics to pay tribute to a centuries-old black statue of Jesus Christ, which is crowned with thorns and bearing a cross, in an annual event that took on a special significance as a remembrance of victims of a monster typhoon. About 6,000 police were deployed to secure the massive, day-long procession.
