Battling through a perfect storm, February 8

8 Feb 2014

It’s a recipe for transport disaster – tens of millions of people returning after their Lunar New Year excursions just as the mainland’s weather takes a sudden turn for the worse. There was widespread disruption on Thursday and yesterday as snowstorms buffeted provinces including Anhui, Henan, Shaanxi, Shanxi and Hebei. The snow in parts of Henan was up to 20cm deep. Dozens of highways were closed and high-speed trains were forced to reduce their maximum speed. About 3.6 billion trips were expected to have been made during the 40-day holiday period, according to official data. Xinhua photographers were out on the packed streets to cover the thick of the action.
