This haunting moonlit image of migrants trying to get a mobile phone signal so they can call home from a Djibouti beach won the World Press Photo of the Year award for US photographer John Stanmeyer. “It’s a photo connected to so many other stories – it opens up discussions about technology, globalisation, migration, poverty, desperation, alienation, humanity,” said jury member Jillian Edelstein. Fellow jury member Susan Linfield said: “So many pictures of migrants show them as bedraggled and pathetic … but this photo is not so much romantic, as dignified.” The winners in all eight categories, as well as the overall award, were announced in the Netherlands on Friday.
