Left in the dust: Mount Kelud eruption blankets Indonesia with ash, February 19

19 Feb 2014

Mount Kelud, a powerful volcano in island of Java, shot ash and debris 19 kilometres into the air last Thursday evening, spreading ash as far as 500 kilometres away from the crater, covering roughly a third of Java. Three people died after buildings collapsed under inches-thick ash, while tens of thousands of people were evacuated and seven airports were closed. "Everyone was screaming and crying, and the city was filled with miseries: I thought doomsday was upon us," one of the villagers said.
