The spoils of power, February 24

24 Feb 2014

It was a palace fit for the richest of kings. A vast mansion of gold-covered ornaments, rooms lined with marble, a fleet of cars, a helipad, and of course a zoo and golf course. Thousands of Ukrainians wandered awestruck around the luxury of President Viktor Yanukovych’s abandoned property, 15 kilometres from Kiev, after it was taken by demonstrators. The scale of the estate appeared to confirm suspicions of corruption on a vast scale. Photographers from Reuters and EPA caught a glimpse of the riches.
