An explosion of festivals and carnivals are happening all over the world, highlighting the period of collective frenzy and indulgence in the run-up to the more sober time of Easter. Each festival, from the Canary Islands to the streets of Rio and the far corners of Uruguay, stem from old traditions, be it religion, medieval folklore or political and cultural movements. Over the years, people have forged their own colourful interpretations, giving rise to unique pageantries that attract tourists and locals alike.
