Feels Like Home: Refugees revive an abandoned Italian village, March 3

3 Mar 2014

A beautiful Italian village just a few miles from the Mediterranean coast, Riace has attracted hundreds of migrants from conflict-torn countries to settle down in what is relatively paradise. The growth of the migrant population has been in step with the continuous dwindling of born-and-bred Italians in the area, leaving many houses sitting empty. Mayor Domenico Lucano believes the refugees can revitalise the village and so should be given houses, education and jobs. “My parents always taught me to welcome strangers,” he says. Although Lucano’s efforts have not been entirely appreciated, his achievements have gained worldwide attention. He was even nominated as one of the best World Mayors in 2010. Photos: Reuters
