Dance of the Dragons, June 3

3 Jun 2014

The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth month in the Chinese lunar calender in honor of Qu Yuan, an ancient Chinese poet and statesman. Qu killed himself in a river and, to keep fish from devouring his body, villagers took to their boats and splashed the water with their paddles, beat drums and threw rice. The legend has endured today with annual dragon boat races across China, which attract thousands of tourists and competitors from all over the world.
