University challenge: Mainland students' annual college entrance exam, June 9

9 Jun 2014

Educational departments pulled out all the stops to ensure the national college entrance exam ran smoothly at the weekend. Known as the gaokao, the exam was taken by 9.39 million candidates all over the mainland - up 270,000 from last year. The Ministry of Education had urged educational departments and schools to strengthen safety and logistical management, and ensure that visually impaired candidates were offered braille test papers and help from special personnel. Local governments were put on emergency alert in case of traffic jams or bad weather to ensure students got to the venues on time. It seems they passed the test. Photos: Xinhua, AFP, Reuters, AP
