Taming deserts, June 21

21 Jun 2014

Desertification is a major problem in China, where deserts make up 27 per cent of the land area. Overgrazing has contributed to the problem, which is estimated to cost the economy more than 120 billion yuan (HK$150 billion) a year. Several national projects have been launched since 1978 to halt the encroaching deserts. These include building grids in the sand, planting trees and creating forest protection programmes. Photographers from Xinhua, China Foto Press and Imaginechina took to the deserts of Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, and the provinces of Gansu and Qinghai to capture these images of the fight against sand and of its successes.
