It was the worst storm to hit Hainan in 41years. Typhoon Rammasun slammed into Wenchang, northeastern Hainan, on July 18, packing gusts that reached 74 metres per second. Official figures show that in total Rammasun hit 216 towns and affected 3.26 million people. Some 18,000 were relocated and economic losses totalled at least 11.95 billion yuan (HK$15 billion).
