A meeting of minds, September 22

22 Sep 2014

It was the first visit by a Chinese president to India in eight years, and Xi Jinping was keen to make his mark last week. Even before he arrived, China committed to investing US$100 billion in India over five years, and signed US$20 billion worth of deals during the trip. Xi, keen to improve the often tense relations of the past, spoke of how China saw India as a long-term partner and said the two nations faced “historic opportunities”. But he also wanted to establish a personal rapport with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and of course he had his wife, Peng Liyuan, to help win over their hosts. Photos: AP, Xinhua, Reuters, AFP
