Burning issue, September 25

25 Sep 2014

An international day of action on climate change brought hundreds of thousands of people onto the streets of New York on Sunday, easily exceeding organisers’ hopes for the largest protest on the issue in history. They said that by being on the streets, issuing their dire warnings, they could help propel world leaders meeting at a UN summit in the city into taking action to cut carbon emissions. As expected, the politicians were quick to call for ambitious action to combat climate change, but the pledges remained well short of concrete goals. Among the celebrities rubbing shoulders with world leaders was Chinese actress Li Bingbing (below), who spoke at the opening session. All attention will now turn to key UN talks in Paris next year.
