Home alone, November 19

19 Nov 2014

These pictures – from China Foto Press – show seven children who are now being cared for by their grandparents, and in one case by a new mother, after their original mothers left home and their fathers migrated in search of work. They are among 28 schoolchildren in the poverty-stricken Zhejiang village of Lishui in the same predicament. They each show an item linked to their mothers – photos, a mirror, a comb, a jade bracelet and an envelope with a drawing of the child’s mother. The fathers often paid money to marry Yunnan or Guizhou women, who later became disillusioned with village life and left.
