The canal carved by hand, April 11

11 Apr 2015

It was considered to be one of the greatest achievements by Chinese workers in the 1960s. The subject of much propaganda, the Red Flag Canal in Henan was dug entirely by hand by thousands of workers. Diverting Zhang River water for irrigation, the main canal is 71km long but its many distribution branches gives the system a total length of 1,500km. The canal winds through 42 tunnels and even along the side of a cliff. April 4 marked the 50th anniversary of the canal's completion. Photographers from Xinhua and Imagincechina returned to the canal and compared photographs from the 1960s with the present day.
