High in the Qinling mountains of Shaanxi province, Bai Zilin and his wife Hou Jie have set up a private school teaching classic Chinese culture. Zhongnan Mountain Academy has nine pupils, aged eight to 16. The children get up at 5.30am and take part in an hour’s meditation from 6am. After breakfast, the youngsters start their Chinese medicine class, followed in the afternoon by calligraphy, archery, martial arts or music. The pupils have two meals a day, both vegetarian. They are allowed to watch cartoons on TV for an hour in the evening before another hour of meditation. Bedtime is 9pm. The couple opened the school five years ago. Photos: ChinaFotoPress
