Waste not, want not, June 5

As the world marks World Environment Day today, the mainland’s increasing industrialisation and growing consumerism has resulted in a major waste problem. In 2012, it was estimated that the mainland produced 273 million tonnes of waste every year. That’s equal to more than 220kg of waste per person. In many parts of the country, recycling is done by small, family-owned workshops. From tyres to copper and from cans to electronics, across the mainland there are people turning waste into a livelihood, as photographers from Reuters, Xinhua, Agence France-Presse and Imaginechina discovered.
